Coaching and mentoring are development techniques used to enhance an individual’s skills, knowledge or performance. These techniques are usually carried out on a one to one basis. The term coaching and mentoring is often used synonymously, although they are two different approaches.
"Unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them" Sir John Whitmore, 2004
"Provides a spectrum of learning and supporting behaviours, from challenging to being a role model, from helping to build networks to simply listening, from helping to work out what someone wants to achieve, and why, to planning the change" Professor David Clutterbuck
Some of the shared characteristics used by coaches and mentors are:
| Coaching | Mentoring |
| Concerned with task | Concerned with implications beyond task |
| Focuses on skills and performance | Focuses on capability and potential |
| Primarily a line manager role | Works best off-line |
| Agenda set by or with the coach | Agenda set by the learner |
| Emphasises feedback to the learner | Emphasises feedback and reflection by the learner |
| Typically addresses a short term needs | Typically a longer-term relationship |
| Feedback and discussion primarily explicit | Feedback and discussion primarily about implicit, intuitive issues and behaviours |

Coaching has become a popular tool for supporting employee development. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) annual Learning and Development Survey Report 2014 found that 76% of organisations were offering coaching and mentoring with an additional 12% planning to offer it in 2015.
We provide one to one coaching with key business leaders that enhances their development and help them achieve key goals for organisational success. We offer one to one face to face or telephone coaching sessions to employees at all levels within organisations to assist in personal and performance development.
Coaching can be a challenging activity for even the most effective leaders. Why not encourage your leaders to complete a Coaching and Mentoring qualification? We are an approved centre for the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and would be happy to work with your coaches and mentors to develop their skills even further.
